When Boy Meets Girl…A Story of Style by Stylist Ashley Chin, Starring Leondra and Kurt

What was the inspiration behind the photo-shoot? (Celebs, looks, location, models, etc.)

For this shoot it was actually my first time styling a guy. I wanted it to be like a “high school” love type of thing when it came to the chemistry between the two models. When I styled Leondra, we channeled the lovely Janelle Monae as much as we could. The model and I, really love Janelle’s sense of style, personality and the way she goes about her projects so care-free and charismatic!

How long have you been a fashion stylist?

I’ve been in the biz for about five or more years.  (Jokingly laughs), veteran status.

How were you able to transition from styling as a hobby to a full-time career?

Well, it was really hard for the most part. I had to stop waiting for people to book me and create my own photo-shoots. I’d say networking with different models, photographers and clothing brands is key. Don’t burn bridges.

What celebrities have you worked with? (I remember Teairra Marie from our previous interview 🙂

(Laughs) Yes, I’ve worked with Teaira, Claudia Jordan. I’ve assisted two celeb stylists: Joe Exclusive & Leon Frager. Hopefully, I’ll have more celebrity clientele, in the near future.

What advice would you give to up and coming fashion stylist on getting started and turning their passion into their primary source of income?

I would definitely say make sure you have a job, (laughs). That way you can INVEST in your craft, network with models, photographers and clothing brands. Always make sure they are legit. Don’t be willing to accept pickle juice when you can have champagne.
